OVA's OCs: Sheikah Shrine Maiden Ke'Ria

Writer: OVA the ArtistOVA the Artist

Evening! 🌙 I'm excited to say all for of my original maidens have been updated! I am doing a little writing on my high priestess, which will be my last little project bringing me into my Zora theme for May! I have the idea for an April sticker drop as well! (depending on how testing goes)

Shrine Maiden: Ke’Ria

A fantastical woman based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Ke'Ria's first design from 2022

Age: 35

Element: Wind

Weapon: Fans

Ke’Ria was born to a high priestess, Kima, a short time after the Great Calamity. She chose the Spring of Courage to give birth, and so she bathed her newborn in those waters for the first time before bringing her home to Kakariko. Many celebrated Ke’Ria’s birth and others as a sign of future peace and prosperity. Once Kima returned to the village, she received the High Council’s approval for leave to raise Ke’Ria. The new mother and father adored their child, and provided for her best they could.

Once Ke’Ria turned 12, Kima resumed her roles as high priestess. While this meant less time together, Ke’Ria would still spend plenty of weeks with her mother, who she’d grown significantly close to. Kima became and continued to be a formidable high priestess, however she’d grown into a caring mother as well. The two went hand in hand for Kima and Ke’Ria began to understand the more she grew. And while she swore to be just like her mom growing up, Kima always encouraged her to forge her own path.

The day it happened, the rain came down in buckets. The shrine maiden trials were delayed because of it. Ke’Ria could feel something wasn’t right. Her mother wouldn’t be gone this long in weather like this. Not with her daughter’s trials coming. Voicing her concerns to her father, Shek, he promptly requested people begin searching. Shrine maidens and others immediately started scouting for any sign of Kima. Their efforts ended in vain though, with the discovery of her body in the Dueling Peaks region. The attack obviously pointed back to the Yiga; their symbol having been left to claim credit.  The news took an incredible toll on Ke’Ria. No amount of comfort could console the wounded girl. Shek continued to be there for support, but he too felt useless in stifling his daughter’s grief.

At first, Ke’Ria skipped the trial for shrine maiden. The loss of her mother created distance between her and the organization. Even with overwhelming support, she still struggled with her grief. Time continued and the road to mending slowly carried on. Her future felt unclear. While drawn to the life of a shrine maiden, she feared it would only remain a painful reminder of what she lost. Fortunately, fate intervened in the form of a dream. The Goddess had granted Kima a final visit, and she consoled her brokenhearted daughter. She apologized for such an early departure, and reminded Ke’Ria the path ahead was hers, and hers alone, to create.

Go, with my love, whatever you do I will always be proud.

Ke’Ria awoke with tears in her eyes, a sense of relief and peace washed over her. She left her bed and made her way to the Goddess statues in the middle of town. Ka’Ria lay at its base for the night, thanking Hylia for her gift, and vowing to honor such generosity shown to her.

From that night on, she had a new awareness. Even though the anguish remained, the weight felt carriable now. Ke’Ria shared her experience and expressed the newfound desire to attempt the trials. Though 17, the council granted her an opportunity to test her aptitude. With such a rich lineage within the organization, it came as little surprise she was more than capable. Despite her late acceptance, Ke’Ria displayed excellent scholastic and physical ability. She became a role model to many of her peers, admiring her for both her strength and perseverance. The council bestowed the honor of her tattooing and presentation on her father. A bittersweet moment for them, both aware her mother should be the one with this privilege. Shortly after receiving her maiden title, Ke’Ria pushed for better protection protocol within the organization. She cited both the increase of Yiga sightings and the death of her mother. Her ideas were met with abundant support, and she spearheaded many objectives to ensure the safety of shrine maidens and high priestesses. Her twin fans and extraordinary wind strength make her an excellent maiden for protection, and she takes her role seriously in honor of her mother.
